Chile, 1983: court-appointed land surveyor Inés Carvallo arrives on the Chiloé island of Quenac with a limp and a borrowed theodolite to settle a boundary dispute, and finds every islander's boundary stone carved with the same date, the night a naval patrol boat vanished offshore ten years earlier. Everyone tells her the same story word for word, and before the supply ferry returns on Friday she must hand the waiting naval officer his names, forge a report that shields the island, or press the one fisherman ready to talk, knowing it may cost him everything.
