Fourteen Across: A Clue She Never Set

Edinburgh, 1957: at nine o'clock one night, Evening Clarion crossword setter Moira Buchan finds that tomorrow's puzzle hides a clue she never wrote, spelling out the Lord Provost's jeweller's address and the hour of 3 a.m. With the presses rolling at midnight and a half-knitted scarf on her needles, she must pull the grid and tip off whoever planted it, let it run and stake out the shop with the paper's sulky crime reporter, or keep solving the answers that seem to point at someone in her own newsroom.
