In 1924, sixteen-year-old llama driver Ximena Quispe is guiding an American survey party across the Peruvian altiplano with her grandfather's cracked brass compass, until the expedition leader's journal reveals that the uncharted lake they seek will be dammed for a copper company, drowning her grandmother's village. With snow closing the pass in four days, she must keep her promise and lead them on, lose them among the salt flats, or confide in the young cartographer who trusts her and gamble on which side he will choose.
