The Sweetest Thing, Owed to a Pigeon

Half a century ago in Lisbon, custard-tart seller Dolores Pim won the national pastry prize by promising a pigeon in a waistcoat "the sweetest thing I will ever make." Now, three days before her granddaughter's wedding, the pigeon lands on her windowsill with the contract in its beak and a flock of lawyer-pigeons behind it, come to claim the wedding cake and possibly the wedding itself. From her cart beside Tram 28, Dolores must bake something sweeter still, hunt for a loophole in the pigeons' fussy bylaws, or confess to her family that her famous prize was a swindle.
