Letters from a Son Who Never Came Home

Trieste, 1948: Aurelio Benussi, a public letter-writer at a folding table outside the station, has spent two years forging cheerful letters from a dead soldier to his widowed mother, Signora Zorzi, to spare her the news from the Russian front. When a gaunt man in a Red Cross coat steps off the Ljubljana train claiming to be her son and asking to see the letters, Aurelio must decide whether to expose him, let the stranger take the dead man's place at her kitchen table, or confess his own forgery and finally let her grieve.
